Two members of the Dexeus Mujer team, Dr Francesc Tresserra, director of Gynaecology R&D, and Dr Carmen Ara, specialist in Gynaecological Oncology and Breast Pathology, are part of the group of experts who have carried out the pilot programme to establish and validate the quality guidelines to which Breast Units must conform according to the European Union guidelines.
Their work is part of the ECIBC (European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer) project, which aims to ensure that all cancer patients can receive equal medical care, regardless of the EU country in which they live.
The 12th meeting of Breast Units and Unit Coordinators, organised by the Spanish Society of Senology and Breast Pathology, was held on 28 April at the CaixaForum in Madrid. The meeting presented the quality scheme and the conclusions of the pilot project that has been carried out to assess whether the guidelines were understandable and applicable to 8 Breast Units that voluntarily decided to participate from Germany, Slovenia, Spain (two units), Italy, Latvia, Poland and Romania.
The meeting concluded with good results, as the attendees confirmed that the European quality assurance scheme is suitable for this purpose and the Breast Units consider that, besides being useful, it will improve their quality.
