Dexeus Mujer offers clinical simulation-based training on shoulder dystocia

Simulation-Based Team Training (SBTT) is rapidly becoming an essential part of high-quality programmes in many obstetric units and is an effective tool for reducing maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality. One of the key benefits of this type of training is that it allows participants to make mistakes without real consequences. Trainees can face challenging situations in a safe environment and learn from mistakes without any risk to patients. Although it was initially used as a method for improving individual technical skills, SBTT has also proven highly effective in improving the performance of healthcare teams.

Our centre offers a blended theoretical-practical course on shoulder dystocia organised by the Dexeus Mujer Foundation. The course is led by the Clinical Simulation Team of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine of the Hospital Universitari Dexeus, in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Hospital Universitari General de Catalunya. Additional support is provided by the Medical Simulation Centre (SIMDARYD) of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation and Pain Management (DARYD) of the Hospital Universitari.

The course aims to provide participants with the knowledge needed to understand the pathophysiology of this medical problem, quickly recognise it and follow the protocol for action. It also teaches the specific techniques and manoeuvres used to safely and effectively resolve shoulder dystocia. Furthermore, the course promotes teamwork and effective communication during obstetric emergencies.

This course is designed for doctors and nurses specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology, midwives, doctors, nurses, and nursing assistants.
