The nursing staff of the Reproductive Medicine Unit at Dexeus Mujer has carried out a retrospective observational study to see whether incorporating folliculometry into their routine during egg donation monitoring cycles can contribute to improving donor satisfaction without affecting the outcome of the treatment. The results have been compared with those obtained when the monitoring ultrasound is performed by the medical team.
A total of 2301 cycles were analysed: 1186 were monitored by the medical team and 1115 by the nursing team. There was no difference in the mean age of the patients (26 years ± 5 years). The study found that in the nurse-monitored cycles, donors underwent more days of stimulation, more blood tests, and fewer ultrasounds, although without any clinically relevant differences.
However, in the nurse-monitored cycles the total number of oocytes retrieved and of MII obtained was higher and the cancellation rate was lower. Likewise, in the nurse-monitored cycles, there was an improvement in donor satisfaction with the care received, without any impact the results.
The study was recently presented by Ana Moreno at the 8th National Congress of Reproductive Nursing, held as part of the 33rd Congress of the Spanish Fertility Society, which took place last May in Bilbao.
