Dr Pascual García Alfaro and Dr Gabriela Quintero present their Doctoral Theses

Dexeus Mujer promotes research in all areas related to women’s health. At the same time, it supports the participation of doctors in national and international forums, the completion of their doctoral theses and the publication of studies in journals with the highest impact factor in the scientific community.

Recently, two of our gynaecologists have presented their doctoral theses at Dexeus Mujer, under the direction or co-direction of professionals from our medical team. They are Dr Pascual García Alfaro, Head of the Menopause Unit at Dexeus Mujer, and Dr Gabriela Quintero Polly, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician. Both theses are part of the doctoral programme at the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).

Dr García Alfaro’s thesis, entitled ‘Factors Related to Muscle Strength and Bone Mineral Density in Postmenopausal Women,’ was carried out under the supervision of Dr Francesc Tresserra Casas and Dr Ramón Carreras Collado.. The aim of his research was to determine the general and hormonal factors associated with grip strength and bone mineral density (BMD). He also sought to assess whether homocysteine and its relationship with grip strength and BMD could be useful in daily clinical practice when assessing postmenopausal women.

The results of his research have recently been published in high-impact journals such as Climateric and Menopause, published by The North American Menopause Society.

Dr Quintero Polly’s thesis, entitled ‘Assessment and Monitoring of the Hiatus Area Using 3D Ultrasound in Pregnancy and Postpartum,’ was supervised by Dr Betlem Graupera and Professor Ramón Carreras. The aim of the study was to analyse the anatomical effects of pregnancy and childbirth on the pelvic floor by evaluating the variations in ultrasound parameters. The final objective was to demonstrate the usefulness of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool in the study of female pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence and defecation disorders so that this assessment can be incorporated into gynaecological check-ups, leading to the development of appropriate preventive and therapeutic strategies.
