From the 13th to the 16th of December 2023, the second edition of the Catalan Week of Simulation was held. This event, emblematic in its focus on clinical safety, is distinguished by the use of simulation as a fundamental tool for medical training and preparation.
Focus on Collaboration and Excellence: Various hospitals across the Catalan geography have coordinated to execute this event. In all centres (Hospital Universitari Dexeus, Hospital del Mar, Hospital de Sant Pau, Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, Hospital Arnau de Vilanova, Hospital Joan XXIII, Hospital de Santa Caterina i Hospital de Palamós) sessions, workshops, and courses on obstetric simulation were conducted.
Innovation at Dexeus Women: Our Dexeus Simulation team (Dr. Nimet Caner, Dr. Marta Claramonte, Dr. Martí Cantallops), under the leadership of Dr Pilar Prats (R&D in Clinical Obstetrics of the Obstetrics Service), organised three prominent activities:
- Key Topics: Critical aspects such as ‘Maternal Morbidity and Mortality in Spain’ and ‘Clinical Simulation’ .
- Renowned Experts: Featuring speakers like Jordi Castillo PhD, , founding member of the Spanish Society for Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety and professor at the UIC, and Dr Oscar Martínez-Pérez, president of the GESO and professor at the Catholic University of Murcia.
- Inclusive Format: A face-to-face day available in an online format, facilitating global participation which attracted over 150 participants from Catalonia, Spain, Portugal, and South America.
- Accreditation as Continued Medical Education: The activity accredited with 0.4 credits.
- Practical Focus: Participants practiced maneuvers to resolve shoulder dystocia, using advanced equipment such as PROMPT pelvis and Feto Prompt.
- Realistic Simulation: Clinical scenarios were recreated for an immersive and applicable learning experience.
- Expert Instructors: Led by prominent professionals, including midwife Susana Rodríguez (Hospital del Mar) and the Dexeus Simulation team.
- Accreditation as Continued Medical Education: The activity accredited with 2.5 credits.
- Specialised Instruction: Led by experienced instructors such as Dr Oscar Martínez-Pérez, Dr Mª Jose Pelegay (Arnau de Vilanova Hospital) and Dr Ivanna Llordela (Arnau de Vilanova Hospital), along with the Dexeus Simulation team.
- Advanced Techniques: Participants delved into techniques such as the use of forceps, vacuum extractors, challenging cesarean section extraction, delivery with significant extraction of the second twin, and breech birth.
- Skills Simulations: An opportunity to practice in controlled environments, preparing for real-world scenarios.
These events not only demonstrated the power of simulation in improving clinical practice but also reinforced our commitment to excellence in obstetric care.
Thanks to the organisers and participants, together, we continue to advance at the forefront of medicine!
