Carlos E. Plancha received his Medical Degree at the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon and trained as a fellow at the University Hospital of Santa Maria in Lisbon. Later pursued research on female gamete biology and preimplantation embryo development, obtaining his PhD at the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, where, as an Associated Professor, he coordinates the teaching of Developmental Biology and of Innovations in Clinical Embryology for medical students, and of Anatomy and Histology for biomedical engineering students.
Co-founded a Reproductive Medicine Clinic in Lisbon – CEMEARE, where he coordinates the IVF-lab, being an ESHRE certified Senior Clinical Embryologist. Has been Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Reproductive Medicine, member of the Executive Committee of ESHRE, Coordinator of the Steering Committee for the ESHRE Certification for Clinical Embryologists, and Associate Editor of the Journal “Human Reproduction”.
He is a Member of the Portuguese Competent Authority in Medically Assisted Reproduction (CNPMA). In ESHRE he is the SIG Committee Chair-elect, and Member of the Steering Committees for the European Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine exam and for European Union Affairs.
His main scientific area of interest is mammalian oogenesis and folliculogenesis. Collaborates in pre- and post-graduate activities and has supervised the work of several graduate and undergraduate students. He coordinated national and international research projects and organized several meetings, namely the ESHRE campus series on “Mammalian oogenesis and folliculogenesis: in vitro and in vivo approaches” and on “Epigenetics in Reproduction”. He was a local organizer of the 31st ESHRE Annual Meeting, which took place in Lisbon, Portugal, in June 2015, being the largest ESHRE meeting until that moment, with more than 10.000 registered participants. He has published several papers in scientific journals and book chapters.
