Gemma Arroyo

Gemma Arroyo graduated from the University of Barcelona in 1997 as a biologist, her interest on the field of the biology of human reproduction led her to a Master on Human Assisted Reproduction Techniques of Autonomous University of Barcelona (1997-1999). In 2003 she graduated Master in Cellular biology of the Autonomous University of Barcelona that was completed in a Doctorate in cell biology (2015). She is an embryologist Senior specialist by the ESHRE (2008) and the Association of the Biology of the Reproduction, ASEBIR (2011).
Currently she is co-responsible of the In vitro fertilization laboratory at Hospital Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona, Spain, were she works as a Senior Embriologyst too. As a clinical embryologist, she has long experience in the manipulation of oocytes, sperm, testicular material and embryos, micromanipulation, evaluation of embryonic development and cryopreservation, as well as the management, organization and development of the laboratory.
She does teaching activity in many masters and universities. The fields of research in which she worked recently have been mainly the in vitro maturation of oocytes and the incorporation of new technologies in the laboratory of IVF as polarized light microscopy. Also she has done development work in evaluation of the embryos in the early stages of their development, such as standardization and improvement of protocols of freezing sperm, the problem of the donation of embryos and oocytes, familiarizing so with the legislation governing assisted human reproduction techniques. Currently, her fields of interest are developed under working groups of development of new techniques of which she belongs, as the in vitro maturation of oocytes, embryonic scores in the early stages of embryos and embryonic becoming reference quality these areas of expertise at the national and international level.
She has been Senior deputy of the groups of interest in embryology of the scientific societies Association for the Study of the Reproductive Biology (ASEBIR) and the Spanish Society of Fertility (SEF), and Special Interest Group of Embryology of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) performing many multicenter studies, guidelines and publications. Since 2022 she is Coordinator of the Special Interest Group of Embryology of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE).
